Program Mission Statement:

The Residency Program in Pediatric Optometry at Phoenix Children's Hospital provides qualified optometrists with advanced clinical education and advanced competency training in the clinical examination, diagnosis and management of eye and vision problems encountered in pediatric eye care.


Program Description:

Typical Weekly Hours and After-Hours Responsibilities:

The resident is scheduled for a minimum of 40 hours per week at the Phoenix Children's Hospital facilities throughout the Phoenix area. The resident has limited on-call responsibilities to phone triage, but does not see patients after-hours. The resident will be providing care for patients from infancy to ages 25 years.


Requirements for Completion:

  • The resident is required to deliver clinical services at a level that is satisfactory to the Program Coordinator of the Pediatric Optometry Residency at Phoenix Children's Hospital.

  • The resident must keep logs of all patient evaluations.

  • The resident will develop case reports or posters to accumulate points for the American Academy of Optometry Fellowship program during their residency year.

  • The resident must perform in a professional manner in the delivery of patient care services and observe those proprieties of conduct and courtesies that are consistent with the rules and regulations governing Phoenix Children's Hospital.

  • The resident is expected to assist in the continuing education programs provided at the Department of Ophthalmology, Phoenix Children's Hospital.

  • The resident must participate in and complete all requirements set forth in the curriculum.

Application Information

Application Materials and Procedures:

  • Applicants must apply to this residency program through the Optometry Residency Match (ORMatch) online at www.natmatch.com/ormatch/. 

  • Applicants must submit a letter of intent describing the applicant's reasons for pursuing a residency at PCH, as well as their goals and expectations for the year.

  • Three letters of recommendation from faculty or practicing optometrists familiar with the applicant's clinical and/or didactic abilities are required; at least one letter must be from a faculty member.  Letters should be submitted directly by the author through ORMatch.

  • Applicants must include a current curriculum vitae, NBEO board scores, and an unofficial optometry school transcript through ORMatch.

  • Qualified applicants will be invited for an interview

  • Applicant rankings will be determined by Residency Coordinator and submitted to ORMatch.


Selection Procedure and Admission Criteria:

  • Applicants must earn the degree of Doctor of Optometry from a school or college of optometry accredited by the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education prior to the starting date of the residency program.

  • Applicants must have passed the NBEO Part I and have taken Part II by the application deadline. The selected candidate must have passed Part II and have passed or be scheduled to sit for Part III.

  • Applicants must be eligible to be licensed as an optometrist in the state of Arizona
