Program Description

Combined Residency/Graduate Program: No
Program Mission Statement:

The mission of the Optometry Residency Program at the VA Boston Healthcare System is to foster the residents' development of advanced diagnostic and patient management skills in the care of patients with visual problems, ocular disease, and ocular manifestations of systemic disease in a multidisciplinary hospital-based setting. This is accomplished by mentored clinical training and facilitation of resident involvement in an interdisciplinary approach to patient care and is supported by a strong didactic curriculum.

Program Description:

Residents function as members of a multidisciplinary healthcare delivery team which optimizes patient care through coordinated efforts. Their clinical exposure in VA optometry and ophthalmology clinics is complimented by experience at several prestigious external rotation sites. Opportunity to observe surgery and participate in the post-operative care of cornea, cataract, retina, and glaucoma patients is incorporated. Each resident takes off-hours emergency call every 9th week. Our weekly Rounds sessions form the cornerstone of our didactic program and consist of lectures and workshops geared to enhance the residents' clinical acumen. Residents participate in quarterly literature review and informal case studies; they are mentored in the preparation of two 1-hour CE courses and a paper. Additionally, residents are required to submit an abstract to the AAO in anticipation of presenting at the Academy Meeting and contribute in lecture or poster form to NECO's year-end residency conference. Teaching opportunities are available both on-site and at NECO.
