Program Mission Statement:

The mission of The Eye Care Center of NJ Optometry Residency Program in ocular disease/primary care is to provide an intense, comprehensive didactic and clinical training program that prepares the optometrist to achieve advanced clinical competencies. This advanced training program in ocular disease/primary care will enable the resident to diagnose and manage patients with a variety of complex, challenging ocular conditions and ocular manifestatons of systemc disease and will provide the foundation for career long learning in the future advancement of optometry.


Program Description:

We are a general/subspecialty practice with two O.D.'s and five M.D.'s. The practice has been in the same area for 30 years. We are a high volume practice with a heterogeneous patient population (age, race, socioeconomic background). The doctors also have a surgery center. Our practice offers cataract, glaucoma, retina, cornea, and contact lens care. We treat patients from infants to senior citizens.



We have ECC, OCT, Corneal Topographer, Pachymetry, Retinal Camera, Visual Field, and iCare. -The resident will be able to observe surgical/lasik procedures

Program Starting Date: Second week of July
Typical Weekly Hours and After-Hours Responsibilities:

Typical weekly hours: 40-45;  No after-hours responsibilities


Requirements for Completion:

The requirements for residency completion include:



• Attend and complete all assigned clinic sessions in a professional manner and remain in clinic until all patients are cared for or the clinic attending states otherwise



• Maintain patient care and didactic/scholarly logs as assigned 



• Attend and document all other assigned activities, including in-house clinical, didactic, and scholarly activities



• Complete the required manuscript of publishable quality



• Present a clinical grand rounds case at PCOSU Resident Day



• Achieve satisfactory performance evaluations



• Complete all assigned evaluations of the residency program and faculty



 



Completion status is discussed at each of the formal evaluations with the resident, as well as periodically throughout the year.  The residency certificate is released only upon completion of all elements.

Selection Procedure and Admission Criteria:

Prior to matriculation, the applicant must have received O.D. Degree from a school or college of optometry accredited by ACOE



Applicant must be licensed/license eligible in New Jersey; Letter of intent, Curriculum Vitae; Official optometry school transcript, Three letters of recommendation from clinical faculty; Copy of NBEO transcript. Interview required.
