Program Mission Statement:

The mission of the Ocular Disease Residency Program at the VAMC Wilmington, Delaware, is to provide continued post doctoral training for optometric practitioners desiring to advance their clinical training beyond that of entry level optometric practrice. The program emphasis is on the diagnosis, treatment and management of ocular disease in the veteran population through active participation in the patient's health care team.


Program Description:

The optometric resident receives additional training in the detection and management of ocular disease in a multidisciplinary healthcare system. This is in preparation for a career in a multidisciplinary setting as well as clinical education.

Typical Weekly Hours and After-Hours Responsibilities:

Clinic meets weekdays from 8:00 am. until 5:00 pm. No after hours on-call responsibility


Requirements for Completion:

Successful completion of clinical and didactic assignments in addition to submission of publishable paper.


Program Salary/Stipend: $38,115 for 2021-22; TBD for 2022-23

Selection Procedure and Admission Criteria:

1) Prior to matriculation, the applicant must have received O.D. Degree from a school or college of optometry accredited by ACOE; 2) Letter of intent; 3) Current Curriculum Vitae; 4) Official optometry program transcript; 5) Official NBEO transcript; 6) Three letters of recommendation from members of applicant's clinical faculty.

United States citizenship is required to qualify for VHA appointment in a paid VA optometry resident position funded by the Office of Academic Affiliations. Reference: VA Handbook 5005/57, Part II, Chapter 3, Paragraph 3.g.(1) & (5)(c), dated June 14, 2012.
